A Lifelong Dedication to Wildlife Conservation

I'm Sudath Abeysinghe

Where I share my lifelong passion and expertise in wildlife conservation, with a special focus on Asian elephants. As an active member of the Asian Elephant Specialist Group (AEsG) under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), I have dedicated over two decades to studying and conserving these majestic creatures.

My journey began with a deep fascination for wildlife during my early years, which I nurtured through various wildlife rehabilitation activities. This passion led me to earn two Master’s degrees: one in Environmental Management from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, and another in Health, Safety, and Environmental Management from the University of South Wales, UK. These academic pursuits provided a strong foundation for my role as Project Manager at the Biodiversity and Elephant Conservation Trust (BECT), where I have served since 2002.

A Lifelong Dedication to Wildlife Conservation

Key Points

A key highlight of my career has been lecturing at 3,028 schools across Sri Lanka, educating students about biodiversity and elephant conservation. Through these awareness programs, I have contributed to fostering a deeper understanding of the importance of conserving elephants and mitigating human-elephant conflicts.

Sri Lanka, with its rich elephant culture, faces significant challenges in managing human-elephant interactions. As a manager at BECT, I have been at the forefront of human-elephant conflict mitigation efforts, overseeing projects aimed at reducing confrontations between elephants and local communities. My work includes the construction of community centers and development projects in wildlife-adjacent villages, which provide safe spaces for human activities and reduce the encroachment on elephant habitats.

I have also played a key role in promoting eco-tourism as a sustainable solution to conservation. By integrating local communities into tourism initiatives, we have been able to create economic incentives for wildlife preservation, allowing people to benefit from conservation efforts while reducing human-wildlife conflicts.

In addition to fieldwork, I have participated in various international conferences and symposia, where I’ve collaborated with leading conservationists. My involvement in these global platforms, including multiple Asian Elephant Specialist Group Symposia, has allowed me to contribute to critical discussions on the future of elephant conservation in Asia.

Throughout my career, I have authored research papers, booklets, and educational materials, contributing to the global knowledge pool on Asian elephants and their behavior. I have co-authored two booklets on biodiversity and translated “The Elephant in Sri Lanka” into Sinhala, the local language, making valuable conservation knowledge accessible to a wider audience.

I invite you to explore my blog, where I will share my experiences, insights into elephant behavior, human-elephant conflict solutions, and the ongoing efforts to protect this endangered species. Together, we can make a difference in safeguarding the future of elephants and preserving the biodiversity of our planet.
